Implementing an online classroom into all classes is an intense subject brought up within education. Veteran and Novice teachers sometimes tremble at the thought of not doing an assignment on a worksheet, or getting the information solely in the traditional classroom setting. With Canvas, teachers can begin to explore beyond the four walls of their room, and students will be able to receive information from all over the world. This being my 8th year of teaching, I can only admit that this idea was once truly frightening for me. After taking these Digital Leading and Learning courses; however, my thoughts have shifted into a growth-mindset that connects with my colleagues/students’ hearts, and sparks interest in real world applications. For my implementation plan to work, a plan had to be drafted.
"To accomplish this, schools—with the support of
school systems and state departments of
education—need to make sure that professional
learning is planned and organized to engage all
teachers regularly and to benefit all students.
This requires high-quality, sustained professional
learning throughout the school year, at every
grade level and in every subject."

What is Canvas?
Fostering Collaboration
Fear is the true enemy of success. As a teacher who is expected to implement technology at my campus when I first began working, it was not that I wanted to be defiant, but the fact that I had no clue where to start, and no help to get it completed. It was a week before school was set to begin, and our Superintendent sent word to all campuses via email that we were to have technology incorporated into our lesson plans. At this school district, the extent of technology was an overhead projector in our classrooms and one set of school iPads that core teachers had first selection on.
Getting help from the technology department that consisted of 4 people spread out over 7 campuses, was like waiting on hold for the IRS to speak with you. Needless to say, I ended up leaving this campus. I currently work in Mansfield, TX where the possibilities are endless it seems. Our district has a tech team that is phenomenal and ready for any task you ask of them.
Teachers are afraid of what is unclear to them, or something they must develop and implement on their own that was not their idea. Collaboration is a key element with my implementation of Canvas into all classrooms. My colleagues are going to need the support of their content teams to be successful and understand what works for their subject, and what needs to be eliminated or tweaked. Fostering a since of collaboration will be the most important aspect of my plan so that teachers know they have each other to lean on and learn from through this process.
"They created collaborative spaces, professional development
(PD) opportunities and support communities for every employee.
Resistance from the community to these changes was softened by
the understanding that the funds were being prioritized and aligned
to a more coherent vision of learning and teaching in a digital age.
Open communication of their vision was instrumental in mitigating
resistance from stakeholders."

Leaders of Components
There are many components that will be involved throughout this process, and choosing the leaders of each was very strategic. I needed the right individuals presenting each section in order for my colleagues to realize the benefits and significance of a need for change. Phase 1: August back to school In-Service Principal introduces Canvas as a trial run where at least two 7th grade teachers from each department will implement this online classroom into their personal classrooms after attending several professional development classes throughout the first year. A calendar will be presented with the timeline. Phase 2: The Why This is where I get to present my baby. During this presentation, colleagues will get the Why behind the implementation Phase 3: Professional Development 1st Semester The initial PD will be held during 1 planning period for 45 minutes that is content specific on campus weekly for the 1st semester of the school year. These sessions will be complete by our technology team assigned to our campus through MISD. It will look like the following schedule: While attending the weekly sessions on campus, they will also attend interactive sessions with our technology team (planning days) once a month to ensure they are on the right track. They can also get perspectives from other content areas. 2nd Semester Implementation into the classroom will begin if teachers have completed building their desired curriculum and feel comfortable with being uncomfortable with the process. The weekly meetings will now turn into Bi-weekly meetings for feedback and collaboration. The schedule is as follows: Phase 4: Feedback & School-wide During this phase, administrators, the trial team, technology, and myself will meet in extensive meeting to give feedback on experiences. We will come up with solutions and make a schedule to make ourselves available for the next school year and teachers going through the process for the first time. We will also discuss what will need to be done to take implementation school-wide. |
